History of Fort Pierce

Fort Pierce is a city located on the north side of the Indian River in St. Lucie County, Florida, United States. The city is also known as the Sunrise City, due to its location on the east coast of Florida. The city was originally founded as a fort by the U.S. Army in 1838 during the Second Seminole War, and was named after Febiger’s Point, the original name of the site. It was later renamed in honor of General David E. Twiggs, who captured the fort during the MexicanAmerican War. The fort was used as a base during the Third Seminole War and the Indian Wars, and was finally abandoned in 1876. The city was incorporated in 1901.

The area was originally inhabited by the Ais and Jeaga tribes, who were later displaced by the Seminoles. The Second Seminole War began in 1835, and the fort was built as a base of operations for the U.S. Army. The fort was captured by the Seminoles in 1837, but was retaken by the Army in 1838.
