History of Fort Kent
Fort Kent is a city in Aroostook County, Maine, United States. It is the northernmost city in the state of Maine and the easternmost city in the United States. The population was 4,097 at the 2010 census. Fort Kent is bordered on the west by the St. John River and on the north, east, and south by the town of Fort Kent.
In 1623, the French established Fort SaintPierre des TroisRivières at the site. The fort served as the capital of Acadia until 1654 when it was destroyed by the English. The French rebuilt the fort and renamed it Fort Pentagouet. It remained the capital of Acadia until 1710 when it was again destroyed by the English.
In 1783, the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolutionary War and resulted in the United States gaining control of all the land east of the Mississippi River. The British, who still controlled Canada, ceded the area that is now Maine to the American colonies.
In 1809, the American government established Fort Kent as a military post to help defend against a possible attack by the British. The town was named after Governor James Kent of New York.
In 1842, the WebsterAshburton Treaty settled a boundary dispute between the United States and Canada, and Fort Kent became the northernmost point in the contiguous United States.
During the American Civil War, many of the men from Fort Kent joined the Union Army. In 1865, the 12th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, led by Colonel Robert Nichols, was sent to occupy Confederatecontrolled Texas.
In the early 20th century, Fort Kent became known for its potato farms. In 1912, the St. John Valley Potato Growers Association was formed to ship potatoes to other parts of the country.
In 1917, the United States established the Fort Kent Military Reservation to train soldiers for World War I. The reservation was later used to train soldiers for World War II and the Korean War.
In 1964, the Fort Kent International Snowshoe Race was established. The race, which is held every year in February, attracts snowshoers from all over the world.
In 1980, the Fort Kent Winter Carnival was created. The carnival, which is held every year in February, features a parade, snow sculpting, and other events.
