History of Fond du Lac
Fond du Lac is a city in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States. The name is French for “Bottom of the Lake”, and refers to the city’s location at the bottom (or southern end) of Lake Winnebago. The city forms the core of the United States Census Bureau’s Fond du Lac Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Fond du Lac County.
The Native American people called the lake Winnebago and the river between the lake and the Fox River towards Green Bay Oshkosh. The French, who had settled in Green Bay, called the lake Fin du Lac, the “end of the lake.” When the French were driven out by the British in 1763, the amount of trade passing through the area dropped and the Fox River again became the primary route for goods and people. Eventually, the spelling of the lake and the city’s name were Anglicized to “Fond du Lac.”
By 1836, the population of the city was 372. In 1835, the territorial legislature authorized a charter for a city government. Construction of the Military Road from Fort Howard in Green Bay to Fort Winnebago in the Portage was completed in 1838. Fond du Lac was incorporated as a city on February 20, 1852. The first city election was held on April 6, 1852.
The Military Road proved to be an economic boon for the city, as it brought increased trade and travelers through the area. It also allowed for the construction of Fort Howard and other military installations in the area.
The city’s location at the bottom of Lake Winnebago made it a natural hub for shipping and transportation. The Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad arrived in the city in 1854, followed by the Wisconsin Central Railroad in 1871. The chief products shipped out of Fond du Lac were wheat, barley, wool, and livestock.
The city continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The population reached 15,581 by 1900. A number of manufacturing plants were established in the city, including the Threshold Furniture Company (later the Arcadia Furniture Company), the Fond du Lac Machine Company, and the Textile Machine Works.
The city’s location once again proved to be advantageous during World War II, as it was located on the direct route between Milwaukee and Detroit, Michigan. A number of Army and Navy supply depots were established in the city, and the local economy boomed.
After the war, the city’s economy shifted from manufacturing to healthcare and education. St. Agnes Hospital (now Agnesian HealthCare) and Marian University (formerly Sacred Heart College) were founded in the 1950s.
The city’s population reached 41,055 by 1980. Today, the city is home to a number of healthcare and educational institutions, as well as a variety of manufacturing and service businesses. The city’s economy is still largely dependent on healthcare and education, with Agnesian HealthCare and Marian University being the two largest employers.
