History of Flushing
In 1645, the Dutch West India Company purchased the land that would become Flushing for the purpose of farming. It was initially settled by 30 families of English Puritans. However, due to its proximity to the growing metropolis of New Amsterdam (present day Manhattan), it soon became a popular place for wealthy Dutch merchants to build country estates.
The English took control of the area in 1664 and renamed it Flushing, after the village in England where they had come from. The town developed rapidly and soon became a center for shipping and trade. In 1785, it was officially designated as a city.
