History of Florence (South Carolina)
The city of Florence is located in Florence County, South Carolina. The city was founded in 1852 as a small settlement on the Waccamaw River. The city was named for General Francis Marion, who was known as the “Swamp Fox” during the American Revolutionary War. The city grew slowly until the construction of the Waccamaw Railway in 1871. The railway allowed the city to become a major inland port. The city’s economy was further diversified with the opening of the #90 line, a major northsouth highway, in 1923. The city’s population exploded during World War II when Florence became a major training center for the United States Army Air Corps. After the war, the city’s economy slowed but has since rebounded. The city is home to a number of historical sites, including the Florence Stockade, a Civil War prison, and the Waccamaw Siouan Native American tribe. The city is also home to two colleges, Francis Marion University and FlorenceDarlington Technical College.
