History of Fleetwood
The origins of the town of Fleetwood in Lancashire, England date back to the 11th century when a small fishing village grew up on the southern shore of Morecambe Bay. The village was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, and by the 13th century had grown into a small market town with a weekly market and two annual fairs.
The town’s fortunes changed dramatically in 1787 when it was chosen as the site for a new deepwater port by the Admiralty. The construction of the port and associated docks, quays and warehouses led to a huge influx of workers and their families and the population of Fleetwood quadrupled in size.
