History of Fleet

The first recorded mention of Fleet came in the 4th century, when it was listed as a mansio, or stopping place, on the Roman road known as the Via Vulgiviana. This road ran from Winchester to Silchester, and the mansio at Fleet would have offered shelter and refreshment to weary travellers.
The Romans left Britain in the 5th century, and very little is known about Fleet during the early medieval period. However, in the late 9th or early 10th century, a large Saxon burial ground was discovered just outside the town. This suggests that there was already a settlement here at that time.
The Domesday Book, compiled in 1086, records that a manor calledFleet existed at that time, and that it was owned by William the Conqueror’s halfbrother, Bishop Odo of Bayeux. Odo was a powerful and wealthy man, and he built a large palace in Fleet. This was probably the first stone building in the town.
Odo was arrested in 1097 for his part in a rebellion against William II, and his lands were confiscated. The manor of Fleet then passed through a succession of owners in the 12th and 13th centuries, until it was bought by Walter de Bello in 1241.
De Bello was a Norman knight who had fought in the Crusades. He built a castle in Fleet, which later became known as Harmondsworth Castle. This was one of a number of castles built in the south of England at that time, to defend the country against a possible invasion by the French.
Harmondsworth Castle was a large and imposing building, with a moat and drawbridge. It was surrounded by a deer park, where the de Bello family hunted. The castle was in use for about 200 years, until it was destroyed during the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century.

In the 19th century, things began to improve again. In 1812, a new market house was built, and in 1819, the town was linked to London by turnpike roads. The railway came to Fleet in 1863, making it easier for people to travel to and from the town.
