History of Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald, Georgia is a city in Ben Hill County, in the south central part of the state. It is the county seat, and the only city in the county. The city was founded in 1896 and named for Benjamin Franklin Fitzgerald, a state senator. The city is the site of the annual Blueberry Festival, which celebrates the city’s agricultural heritage.
The area that is now Fitzgerald was first settled in the early 1830s by farmers from Georgia and South Carolina. The first settlement was called Newberry, but when a post office was established in 1834, the name was changed to Fitzgerald, after Colonel Benjamin Franklin Fitzgerald, a Georgia State Senator.
The city was incorporated in 1896 and soon became a center for the region’s agricultural industry, especially blueberries. The city is still known as the “Blueberry Capital of the World” and hosts an annual Blueberry Festival.
Fitzgerald began to experience population growth in the early 20th century, due in part to the arrival of the railroad. The city’s population peaked in the 1960s at over 10,000, but has since declined to around 8,700. Despite this decline, Fitzgerald remains the largest city in Ben Hill County.
