History of Fillmore
The city of Fillmore, California, was founded in 1864 by Dr. David Goodwillie. A former slaveholder, Goodwillie was a strong advocate for the rights of African Americans and was one of the first to settle in the area which would become Fillmore. The city was named after Goodwillie’s hometown of Fillmore, New York.
Goodwillie’s farm was successful, and the area around Fillmore soon began to attract settlers. The city grew slowly but steadily, and by the early 1900s, it had a population of over 1,000 people. Many of the city’s residents were employed by the Santa Fe Railroad, which had a large yard in Fillmore.
The city continued to grow in the 20th century, and by the 1960s, it had a population of over 5,000 people. Today, Fillmore is a thriving city with a population of over 10,000 people. It is a popular tourist destination, and its historic downtown area is a registered National Historic District.
