The first recorded mention of Farnworth Castle dates back to 1166, when it was besieged by King Henry II. The castle was built on a strategic site overlooking the River Croal, and was used as a base for the King’s troops during their campaigns against the Scots. Farnworth Castle remained in royal hands until the 13th century, when it was confiscated by the rebel barons during the civil war against King John.
