Farmington is a town in Franklin County, Maine, United States. The population was 7,760 at the 2010 census. It is the shire town of Franklin County. Farmington is home to the University of Maine at Farmington, the state’s public liberal arts college.
The area was once part of the Pejepscot Purchase. Colonel Thomas Hathaway, a wealthy Massachusetts businessman, purchased the township in 1776 from the Saco River Proprietors. When Maine became a state in 1820, the town was designated as the county seat of Franklin County.
The county courthouse and jail were built in 1827. The Simonton Court House, built in 1833, is one of the oldest in the state and still serves as the site of weekly Superior Court sessions.
The town has a historic downtown area with many Victorianstyle commercial and public buildings. The Drake House Museum, located in the downtown, is operated by the local historical society. It is open to the public from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend and contains a collection of artefacts from the town’s history.

The town was first settled in 1776. Farmington was Incorporated on February 23, 1794 from Jay. On March 12, 1802, it annexed part of Temple. On March 27, 1806, it annexed part of Wilton. On March 3, 1807, it annexed part of Chesterville. On September 3, 1807, it was set off and incorporated as a separate town from Jay, including Wilton and Jay. In 1838, the northern part of town was set off to form New Vineyard. On April 5, 1839, part of Industry was annexed to Farmington. On March 20, 1850, part of Temple was separated to form the Plantation of Eastport. On March 12, 1853, Industry was set off and incorporated as a separate town. Farmington is drained by Sandy River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 41.71sqmi, of which, 41.21sqmi of it is land and 0.50sqmi is water.
