Faribault is a city in southeastern Minnesota, United States. The city is part of the Faribault–Northfield micropolitan area. It is the county seat of Rice County. The population was 23,352 at the 2010 census. Faribault is approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
The city’s origins begin with the establishment of Fort Faribault along the Cannon River in 1823. Prior to that, the area was inhabited by the Sioux Indians. The fort was named after Alexander Faribault, a FrenchCanadian trader who operated a nearby fur post. The city itself was platted in 1855 and officially incorporated in 1875.
Today, Faribault is home to a number of manufacturing firms, including Andersen Windows, MinnDak Growers, and Cirrus Aircraft. The city is also home to Shattuck–St. Mary’s, a prestigious boarding school.
The city’s downtown is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Rice County Courthouse (1877) and the Historic Old Central School (1893). The Faribault Main Street Program has worked to revitalize the downtown area in recent years.

Founded in 1856 along the southern banks of the Cannon River in central Minnesota, the city of Faribault is steeped in a rich history. The first settlers of European descent to the area were French fur trappers, attracted to the region by the abundance of beaver pelts. These early pioneers established the settlement of Les Franciscains du Notre Dame des Prairies, which grew to become the city of Faribault.
In the years that followed, Faribault became an important center for trade and commerce, as it was located on the junction of two major railroads. The city also developed a strong manufacturing base, with a number of mills and factories being built along the Cannon River. The 20th century saw further growth for Faribault, with the city’s population reaching its peak in the 1950s.
