History of Falls Church
Falls Church is an independent city in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,332. The estimated population in 2015 was 13,892. Falls Church is included in the Washington metropolitan area.
Falls Church takes its name from The Falls Church, an 18thcentury Anglican parish. The city is home to several historical sites including the falls themselves which gave the city its name. The city has a long and rich history dating back to the founding of the United States.
The first European settlement in the area was made by George Mason in 1682. Mason purchased the land from the local Native Americans and established a plantation. The plantation was called “The Falls Church” after the nearby Anglican church.
The area remained mostly rural until the early 19th century when the city of Alexandria was founded just to the south. This new city brought with it increased development and a more urban lifestyle. Falls Church soon followed suit, incorporated as a town in 1805.
