History of Fairmont
Fairmont is a city in Marion County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 19,097 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marion County.
The town of Fairmont was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in January 1820. The town was named for James Madison’s Virginia estate, Montpelier.
Fairmont is located in northcentral West Virginia along the Monongahela River. It is situated within the Appalachian Plateau physiographic province. The city has a total area of 10.7 square miles (27.7 km2), of which 10.5 square miles (27.1 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) (1.74%) is water.
Fairmont is notable for its wide array of Victorian architecture. The first of these to be built in the city was the West Virginia State Capitol, constructed between 1885 and 1892. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other notable buildings include the 1904 Fairmont Opera House, the 1910 Fairmont State Training School, and the 1923 Union Station.
The town is also home to several museums, including the West Virginia State Museum and the North House Museum.
