Exeter is a historic city in Devon, England. It is the county town and seat of Devon County Council. The administrative centre of the South West region, Exeter is the tenthlargest city in England with a population of 129,800. The city is situated on the River Exe, which is the longest river in Devon. It is about 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Plymouth and 70 miles (110 km) southwest of Bristol. Exeter was the most southwesterly Roman fortified settlement in Britain, although there is evidence a Bronze Age settlement already existed in the area. Exeter became a religious centre after it fell under the control of the West Saxons in the 8th century. It became the capital of Devon in the 10th century.
The present city was founded in the late 9th century by Alfred the Great, who occupied and began the refortification of its existing Roman fort, known as Isca Dumnoniorum. The city’s cathedral, founded in 1133, became Anglican during the 16thcentury English Reformation. The city served as the seat of the Courts of Assize and Quarter Sessions which dealt with major criminal cases from throughout Devon until 1832; it was also the seat of the High Court of the Western Circuit which dealt with civil cases until its merger with the High Court of Justice in England and Wales in 1971.
