Everett is a city located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States,4 miles (6.4 km) north of Boston. The population was 41,668 at the time of the 2010 United States Census. Everett is the ninth largest city in Massachusetts and the fifthlargest city in the Greater Boston metropolitan area.
The City of Everett was originally incorporated as a town on January 19, 1870, and chartered as a city on December 13, 1893, by vote of the citizens of the town. Everett was named after Edward Everett, who served both as U.S. Representative and as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts.
On July 18, 1845, the Boston and Worcester Railroad completed its line to Everett, making it the second town outside of Boston to be connected to the new transportation network. With the introduction of streetcars in the 1880s, Everett grew rapidly as a residential suburb of Boston.
The first public beach established in Boston was Nantasket Beach in Hull, which opened in June 1837; it was then sold to the town of Hingham in 1871 and renamed Hingham Beach. The second beach to open in the Boston area was Revere Beach, which opened on August 22, 1896. It was created out of pasture land by filling in marsh. It was first known as Rumney Marsh Beach, but renamed Revere Beach in 1901. Today, Revere Beach is the only remaining beach of the three that were created along the southern shore of Massachusetts Bay. It is still owned and operated by the MBTA.
In 1910, construction began on the Great Stone Dam, which spans the Spicket River and Corn Milo Brook, creating a milelong reservoir that provides hydroelectric power to the region. The dam and reservoir are part of the Saugus River Watershed. Also in 1910, work began on the Topsfield Fairgrounds, which today is the oldest continuously running agricultural fair in the country. In 1925, the first traffic light in New England was installed at the corner of Main and Elm Streets.
The first true skyscraper built in Everett was the relative modest sevenstory North Shore Hotel, completed in 1928. A much taller building, the seventeenstory Parlin Memorial Library, was completed in 1930. At 108 feet (33 m) tall, it was the tallest building in the Boston metropolitan area outside of Boston proper until the completion of the Prudential Tower in 1964.

History of Everett (Massachusetts)
The city of Everett, Massachusetts is located just north of Boston and has a long and varied history. First settled in 1630, it was originally part of the town of Malden and known as South Malden. In 1838, it separated from Malden and was incorporated as the city of South Boston. Nine years later, in 1847, it changed its name to Everett, after the American vice president at the time, Edward Everett.
During the 19th century, Everett grew rapidly as an industrial center. It became home to several large factories, including the Boston and Maine Railroad shops, the CocaCola Bottling Company, and the New EnglandTelephone Company. In addition, several important politicians, including U.S. Senators Henry Cabot Lodge and Frederick Wood, were born in Everett.
The city continued to grow in the early 20th century, reaching a peak population of over 100,000 in 1930. However, the Great Depression and World War II led to a decline in the city’s fortunes. The factories closed and many residents moved away. Everett’s population fell to just over 50,000 by the 1990s.
In recent years, Everett has undergone a revival. The city has attracted new residents and businesses, and its population has once again begun to grow.
