History of Evanston (Illinois)
Evanston, Illinois, was founded in 1853 by John Evans and eight other men who purchased 2,000acres of land along Lake Michigan. The name of the city is in honor of John Evans. All of the founding men are here to today’s Monument Square Park on Sheridan Road.
Evanston developed steadily throughout the late 1800s. In 1874, Northwestern University was established, and the first public library in the north suburbs was built in 1887. Evanston’s first hospital, St. Francis, opened in 1891, and the town’s first birth occurred there in 1898.
The Great Fire of 1871 burned a large portion of the city, but it was quickly rebuilt. The Orrington Lunt Library, one of the first limestone buildings in Evanston, was completed in two years after the fire.
Evanston became known as a “dry” town when, in 1892, the City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of alcohol. The ordinance was not popular with everyone and was eventually repealed in 1930.
In 1900, the population of Evanston was 24,394, and by 1910 it had grown to 36,695. The growth continued into the 1920s, when the population reached 74,239.
The years leading up to World War II were prosperous for Evanston. New industries, such as the Chicago Brake Company and the National Malleable Casting Company, moved into the city, and Evanston’s population reached 87,329 by 1940.
Although Evanston was not directly involved in the war effort, many of its residents served in the armed forces, and the war also brought new industry to the city in the form of defense contracts.
After the war, Evanston experienced a period of growth and prosperity. In the 1950s, the population reached 115,717, and new businesses, such as theMotorola plant, moved into the city.
Evanston also became home to a number of worldrenowned companies, such as Kraft Foods and Zenith Electronics.
The 1960s brought more changes to Evanston, as the population continued to grow and the city began to become more racially and ethnically diverse. The 1970s were a time of economic crisis, however, as many of the city’s manufacturing jobs disappeared.
The 1980s saw a return to economic growth, and the population reached 119,491 by 1990. The 1990s were a decade of change for Evanston, as the city experienced a significant increase in its minority population.
Today, Evanston is a vibrant, multicultural city with a population of 75,316. The city is home to a number of worldclass institutions, including Northwestern University, and its residents enjoy a high quality of life.
