Euxton is a large village and civil parish within the West Lancashire district of Lancashire, England. The village population is recorded as 11,673 in the 2001 census,[1] increasing to 12,352 at the 2011 Census.[2] Historically part of Lancashire’s West Derby hundred, Euxton was a chapelry of Croston Parish until the formation of the new ecclesiastical parish of St. Bartholomew’s in 1724.[3]
Euxton borders the towns of Chorley and Leyland to the south and west respectively, and is approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Preston city centre. The M6 motorway passes through the north of the village, with junctions 28 and 29 providing access.
The name Euxton is thought to come from the Old English for “ethel’s farmstead”,[4] although one source claims the name comes from the Celtic for “town on the bend of the river”.[5]
The village has two Anglican churches, St Mary the Virgin and St Bartholomew, as well as a Roman Catholic church, St Augustine of Canterbury. There are also Methodist and United Reformed Churches.
There are three primary schools in the village – Euxton CE Primary School, Holy Family Catholic Primary School, and Euxton Village Primary School.[6] Secondary education is provided by Southlands High School, a mixed sex comprehensive school.
For health care, the village is served by an NHS Health Centre on Wigan Road. There is also a veterinary surgery and a dentist on Wigan Road.
The main shopping street in Euxton is Wooghurst Lane, which contains a number of small independent shops, as well as a Cooperative food store. There are two hairdressers, a newsagent, an offlicence, and a florist. There is also a post office on the street.

History of Euxton

In the 12th century, a Norman knight named William de Euxeton settled in the village and built a motteandbailey castle. The castle was later destroyed during the English Civil War (16421651).
During the Industrial Revolution, Euxton became known for its coal mines and textile mills. However, these industries declined in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and today Euxton is a largely residential village.
The village of Euxton is home to two churches, St. James’ Church and St. Anne’s Church. St. James’ Church, which dates back to the 13th century, is the larger of the two and is famed for its stained glass windows.
