History of Eugene
The early history of Eugene is closely linked with the history of the Willamette Valley and the Oregon Country. The first people known to live in the Eugene area were the Kalapuyans, also known as the Calapooya or Calapooian, who settled in the area over 12,000 years ago.
The Kalapuyans were a peaceful people who built their homes along the banks of the Willamette River. They hunted and gathered food from the land and fished from the river. The Kalapuyans were a small tribe numbering around 500 people.
In 1728, the first European trappers, led by Peter Skene Ogden, visited the Eugene area. Ogden and his men were the first white people to set eyes on the Willamette Valley.
In 1811, John Jacob Astor sent a party of men, led by Wilson Price Hunt, to establish a furtrading post in the Oregon Country. Hunt’s party arrived in the Willamette Valley in December 1811, and built a fort they named Fort Astoria.
In 1824, the Hudson’s Bay Company sent a party of men, under the leadership of Dr. John McLoughlin, to establish a furtrading post in the Willamette Valley. McLoughlin’s men built a fort they named Fort Vancouver.
In 1829, Fort Vancouver became the headquarters of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s operations in the Oregon Country.
In 1846, the United States and Great Britain signed the Oregon Treaty, which resulted in the British ceding their claims to the Oregon Country to the United States.
In 1848, the first American settlers arrived in the Willamette Valley. The party, led by Jesse Applegate, included his brothers Lindley and Charles, as well as their families and a few other families. They traveled by wagon train along the Oregon Trail and settled in the southern part of the Willamette Valley.
In 1853, the first public school in Eugene opened.
In 1855, the city of Eugene was officially incorporated.
In 1862, the University of Oregon was founded.
