History of Estes Park
Estes Park is a statutory town in Larimer County, Colorado, United States. A popular summer resort and the location of the headquarters for Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park lies along the Big Thompson River. The population was 5,858 at the 2010 census. The town overlooks Lake Estes and Olympus Dam.
The area around Estes Park was first inhabited by the Ute people. By the early 1860s, a treaty between the Ute and the United States Government opened up land west of the Continental Divide to settlement. With the Homestead Act, homesteaders flocked to the area during the 1870s, establishing ranches and farms. Daniel Freeman became the first homesteader in Estes Park in August 1873. George H. Brayton from Massachusetts became the first permanent resident of the Town of Estes Park in 1874.
In early 1881, President Rutherford B. Hayes visited Estes Park, accompanied by several members of Congress. In June of that year, the first estimate of the population of the town was 350. Elkanah Lamb, one of the first settlers in Estes Park, built the first cabin in the valley in 1874 on a site where the Estes Park Resort now stands. He also established a ferry service across the Big Thompson River, which operated for many years.
The Estes Park post office opened September 5, 1874, with Lamb as postmaster. A sawmill was built near the Big Thompson River by John and David Dill in 1875. The mill provided lumber for many of the early homes and businesses and was later used as a planing mill, box factory, and icehouse. It remained in operation until the 1950s.
The completion of the Denver & Northwestern Railroad in 1910 brought increased tourism to Estes Park. The D&NWRR connected Estes Park to Denver and the Front Range. After the D&NWRR was acquired by the Colorado & Southern Railway in 1918, the C&S operated a mixed passengerfreight train (the “Yampa Bee”) over the Branch six days a week. The C&S discontinued passenger service to Estes Park in 1922.
The growth of the automobile industry in the early 20th century led to the development of several resort hotels in Estes Park, including the Stanley Hotel, which was built in 1909. In 1915, the estimated population of the town was 1,100.
The Estes Park Protective and Improvement Association, predecessor of the presentday Estes Park Area Chamber of Commerce, was formed in 1916 to improve conditions in the Estes Park area. Among the early projects of the association were the construction of a water system, the improvement of streets, and the promotion of tourism.
The Rocky Mountain National Park Act was signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson on January 26, 1915, creating the park.
The influx of visitors brought about by the establishment of the Rocky Mountain National Park resulted in the construction of several new hotels in Estes Park, including the Aspen Glen Hotel, the Elkhorn Lodge, and the Moreno Hotel. The growth of the town continued unabated in the 1920s, with the construction of several new businesses, including a movie theater, a bowling alley, and a bank. The population of the town was estimated at 2,000 in 1928.
The Great Depression and the resulting decline in tourism led to a decrease in the population of Estes Park in the 1930s. The population was estimated at 1,500 in 1930 and 1,200 in 1940. The completion of the Trail Ridge Road in 1932, however, brought an increase in visitors and the population of the town began to grow once again.
The Estes Park Ski Club was founded in 1937 and the first ski tow in Colorado was installed on Prospect Mountain in 1939.
The town of Estes Park was incorporated in 1945.
The population of Estes Park continued to grow in the postWorld War II years. In 1960, the population was 3,314. The Estes Park Medical Clinic, now the Estes Park Medical Center, was constructed in 1966.
The 1970s saw the construction of several new hotels in the town, including the Esplanade, the Aspen Lodge, and the Wildwood Inn. The number of visitors to the Rocky Mountain National Park increased from 2.5 million in 1970 to 3.4 million in 1980.
The population of Estes Park increased to 4,409 in 1990 and 5,032 in 2000. The town was extensively damaged by the 2013 Colorado floods, with the St. Vrain River bursting through the south side of town. The river reached a depth of 9.17 feet (2.79 meters) on September 12, 2013.
More than 1,300 homes and 400 businesses were damaged or destroyed, and the town’s infrastructure was severely damaged.
