Essex is a town in Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 6,683 at the 2010 census.[1] It is situated on the Long Island Sound and includes the villages of Centerbrook and Ivoryton.
The area now known as Essex was first settled about 1650 and became incorporated in 1854.
The town has a number of historical sights, including the General George S. Boutwell House, Essex Steam Train, the E.C. Scranton Memorial Library, and the First Church of Christ, Congregational.
The town is also home to the Connecticut River Museum, which offers a variety of exhibits and programs about the history and ecology of the Connecticut River.

History of Essex
The city of Essex is located in the northeastern part of Maryland, United States. It is the county seat of Baltimore County and the second largest city in the state with a population of about 34,000 people. The city was founded in 1661 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore and the proprietor of the English colony of Maryland. Essex was originally part of an area known as Gunpowder Neck, which included the presentday communities of White Marsh, Oliver Beach, Edgemere, and Sparrows Point.
In 1681, the General Assembly of Maryland divided Baltimore County into three parts. The northern part was designated “Essex County” and contained the presentday city of Essex and the surrounding areas. The southern and western parts of the county were designated “Anne Arundel County”.
The town of Essex was laid out in 1684 by surveyor Thomas Wright. The town was incorporated by the General Assembly of Maryland in 1722. In 1786, the town’s name was changed to “Baltimore Town” after the General Assembly voted to make it the county seat of Baltimore County. The name “Baltimore” comes from the Lord Baltimore, the first Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland.
In 1854, the City of Baltimore annexed the nearby town of Hampstead, which increased the city’s size and population. In 1918, the City of Baltimore annexed the thenindependent city of Locust Point.
