Vacation in Escanaba

Escanaba is a city in the upper peninsula of Michigan. It is the third largest city in the upper peninsula after Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie. The population of Escanaba was 12,616 at the 2010 census. The city is the seat of Delta County. It is situated along Little Bay de Noc in the northern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.

Escanaba was named after the Escanaba River that flows into the nearby bay. The name is from the Ojibwa word for “flat rock”, eskonabes.

The city of Escanaba was settled by Swedish immigrants in the 1850s. They were soon joined by Finnish, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Danish, Cornish, and mostly English miners. They found work in the local iron mines and lumber mills.

The town was home to one of the last known lynchings in the United States. In 1897, three Finnish men, Miina Sillanpaa, Aili Peterson, and IPA Sinikka, were accused of poisoning the town’s water supply with arsenic. One hundred men, some of them drunk, stormed the jail where the women were being held, and dragged them out to the gavelock at the end of the dock where they were hung. The three women were the only known victims of lynching in Michigan.

In recent years, Escanaba has become a popular tourist destination. It is known for its hunting and fishing, as well as its proximity to Lake Superior and the scenic Hiawatha National Forest. Visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, and ATV trails, as well as snowmobiling and crosscountry skiing in the winter. The city also hosts the annual U.P. State Fair, one of the largest agricultural fairs in the Midwest.

Escanaba is also home to the only remaining operating car ferry in the United States, the SS Badger. The Badger offers a 4hour cruise across Lake Michigan to Ludington, Michigan. The ferry carries both passengers and their vehicles, and features a number of amenities onboard, including a gift shop, snack bar, and movies.

Whether you’re looking for a place to hunt, fish, or just enjoy the great outdoors, Escanaba is the perfect vacation destination.

History of Escanaba

The city of Escanaba in the United States is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is the county seat of Delta County and is situated on the western shore of Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Escanaba River. The name “Escanaba” is derived from the Ojibwa (Chippewa) word for “traveling over water” or “crossing over” and refers to the fact that the Escanaba River is used as a portage between Lakes Michigan and Huron.

The area around Escanaba was first inhabited by Native Americans, who used the portage for trading purposes. The French were the first Europeans to settle in the area, establishing a trading post in 1795. The town was officially platted in 1866 and incorporated as a village in 1871. It later achieved city status in 1902.

Escanaba’s location made it an important shipping point for iron ore, lumber and other resources extracted from the surrounding area. The city was also home to several large manufactured products plants, including the Harnischfeger Corporation, which operated a large mining equipment manufacturing facility from 1916 to 1998. Today, Escanaba is a regional center for healthcare, education and business. It is also a popular tourist destination, due to its many outdoor recreational opportunities and its proximity to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
