History of Elmhurst
Elmhurst is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 44,121 at the 2010 census, making it the ordinal 116 largest city in Illinois. Elmhurst is one of the Chicago metropolitan area’s located west of the city. It is one of the Western Suburbs, and is the headquarters of the largest school district in DuPage County, Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205.
The city is also home to the Elmhurst Public Library and Elmhurst College. Elmhurst Memorial Hospital is also located in the city. The city is centered around a downtown area that includes many upscale stores and restaurants, as well as boutiques, antique stores, and theaters.
Elmhurst was founded in 1842 by German immigrant Johann Kahlert and others, who settled in an area that was once part of the 6,000acre (2,400 ha) Elms precursor forest Preserve. Kahlert named the town after his native country of Elmhurst, Queens, New York. The first post office in the town was established in 1846. The Galena and Chicago Union Railroad (now the Union Pacific/West Line) was built through Elmhurst in 1849, which led to increased growth. The town was incorporated as a village in 1855 and as a city in 1873. To serve the increasing needs of the rapidly growing community, early Elmhurst used a volunteer fire brigade structure until the early 1900s when the first paid members were added. This led to the formation of the Elmhurst Fire Department which is still in operation today.
The city grew steadily throughout the late 19th century and early 20th century, with the addition of factories, organizations, and infrastructure. The community supported large agriculture and was known for its parks and treelined streets, earning the nickname “The City of Beautiful Shade.” In 1917, the community was the site ofEmma Goldman’s speech on civil liberties, which drew a crowd of over 7,000 people. In 1925, the NorthWestern Hospital for Women and Children (now Elmhurst Memorial Hospital) opened. In 1936, the first Islamic center in the United States was founded in Elmhurst.
The postWorld War II boom led to rapid development in the city, with the construction of new subdivisions, businesses, and schools. The population increased to over 50,000 by 1960. This growth continued throughout the 1960s, and by 1970, the population had reached 67,065.
Elmhurst’s quick growth came to an abrupt halt in the late 1970s and early 1980s as the local economy slowed and tax base eroded. Between 1980 and 1990, the city lost 6,532 residents, or nearly 10% of its population. The population continued to decline through the 1990s, falling to below 45,000 by 2000. However, since the early 2000s, Elmhurst has seen a resurgence, with the population increasing to over 46,000 by 2010. The downtown area has also seen renewed interest, with the opening of new restaurants and businesses, as well as the restoration of several historic buildings.
