Elizabethton is a city in, and the county seat of, Carter County, Tennessee, United States. Elizabethton is the historical site of the first independent American government (known as the Watauga Association) located west of both the Eastern Continental Divide and the original Thirteen Colonies. Founded in 1769, Elizabethton is also the historical site of Fort Watauga, the first American fort built west of the Appalachian Mountains. Elizabethton has been described as being “never at a loss for something to do,” and its vibrant downtown area provides a variety of entertainment for tourists and locals alike. The city has a rich history and was even visited by President Andrew Jackson in 1819.
