History of Elgin

Elgin is a city located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. With a population of over 110,000 people, it is the eighthlargest city in Illinois outside the Chicago metropolitan area. Elgin is part of the Fox River Valley and is about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Chicago.

Elgin has a long and rich history dating back to the 1830s when the first settlers arrived in the area. The city was originally named “Fountain Village” due to the presence of a natural spring located near the Fox River.

In 1835, the Elgin Academy was founded and is currently the second oldest preparatory school in Illinois. The city was officially renamed “Elgin” in 1839 after the Scottish song “The Lady of the Lake”.

Elgin experienced significant growth during the second half of the 19th century due largely to the presence of the Elgin National Watch Company. The company was the largest manufacturer of watches in the world and employed over 4,000 people at its peak.

The early 20th century was a period of transition for Elgin. The Elgin National Watch Company continued to operate until 1964 when it ceased production due to competition from cheaper imported watches. The city also experienced a decline in population as many residents left for suburban areas.
