History of El Reno

Incorporated in 1891, El Reno was named for the nearby Fort Reno, which had been established in 1874. The word “Reno” comes from the Spanish word “reno” meaning “reindeer”. This name was given to the fort because of the large number of antelope and deer that frequented the area.

The first permanent settlers in the area were Colonel Elias C. Boudinot, Mrs. William A. Dobyns and their family, and Mrs. John J. Lynch and her sons. They all arrived in the spring of 1875. In 1876, a post office was established, and the following year the first school was built.

By 1878, the population had grown to 100, and El Reno was designated as the county seat of Canadian County. The city continued to grow steadily throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1902, the Midland Valley Railroad built a line through El Reno, linking it to Arkansas and Oklahoma City. This helped to spur economic growth in the city, as it became a shipping point for livestock and agricultural products.

The population reached 1,988 by 1910, and El Reno was officially incorporated as a city in 1911. The city continued to grow in the following decades, reaching a peak population of 10,307 in 1960.

Since then, the population has declined slightly, but El Reno remains a thriving community and an important part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
