History of Effingham

Effingham was first settled in 1814 and was named after Effingham Lawrence, who donated the land for the town. The first Effingham courthouse was built in 1816. The town grew slowly but steadily, and by 1858 it had a population of about 600. It was around this time that the arrival of the railroad brought new industry and prosperity to Effingham.

The Civil War had little direct impact on Effingham, but the years following the war were difficult ones. The railroad bypassed Effingham in favor of a new route through nearby Teutopolis, and the town’s population began to decline. In 1887, a devastating fire destroyed much of the downtown area.

Despite these setbacks, Effingham remained an important regional center. The Effingham County Fair, first held in 1858, is still held every year and is one of the oldest and largest county fairs in Illinois. The St. Anthony’s Hospital, founded in 1885, is the oldest hospital in Effingham County.
