History of Eastport
The City of Eastport is a historic seaport located on the easternmost tip of Moose Island in Washington County, Maine, United States. The city is home to a working waterfront, downtown business district, and residential neighborhoods. Moose Island is connected to the mainland by a causeway and bridge.
Eastport was first settled in 1759 by William Higgins and his family. The town was incorporated in 1798. During the War of 1812, Eastport was the site of the Battle of Hampden, the only land battle fought in Maine during the war. In 1820, the city was named the county seat of Washington County.
The early years of Eastport were defined by the lumber and shipbuilding industries. The city became known as the “Lumber Capital of the World” and was home to more than 60 sawmills. In the 19th century, Eastport’s shipyards launchedundreds of clipper ships, barks, brigantines, and schooners. With the onset of the age of steam, Eastport’s shipbuilding industry declined, but the city’s waterfront remained an important center for fishing and trade.
