Eastchester is a town in southern Westchester County, New York, United States. The town’s population is 20,255 (2010 US Census). Eastchester is notable for containing three unincorporated villages (Bronxville, Tuckahoe and Crestwood) and one incorporated village (Dobbs Ferry).
The first European settlers in the area were Dutch farmers in the late 17th century. Eastchester soon became part of the new town of Westchester, which included the presentday Bronx and parts of modernday Yonkers, Mount Vernon and Pelham. In 1788, the eastern portion of Westchester became the town of White Plains. In 1789, the town of Eastchester was split off from Westchester. One of the first decisions made by the town’s commissioners was to purchase land from the Native Americans living there. In 1664, Eastchester was deeded to English settlers by Royal charter. Originally, it included presentday Bronx County, Westchester County, and a portion of southern New York State. The area was divided into three towns: Westchester, Eastchester, and The Bronx. In 1788, the town of Westchester was partitioned to form the new towns of Mount Vernon and New Rochelle. In 1791, the town of Eastchester was divided to form the new town of Scarsdale. In 1846, The Bronx was separated from Westchester County, becoming a county in its own right.
