Sights in East Providence
East Providence is the fourth largest city in Rhode Island with a population of 47,214 at the 2010 census. The city was incorporated in 1663, and was originally part of the town of Warren. East Providence is home to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport and the new Tockwotton on the Waterfront assisted living facility. The city is also within the Providence metropolitan area.
The first recorded inhabitants of East Providence were the Wampanoag. The first European settlers were from England and arrived in 1636. The Narragansett sachem Canonicus granted Roger Williams a sizable tract of land for his new village. In 1663, the four towns of Portsmouth, Newport, Jamestown, and New Shoreham were combined into one Rhode Island colony. East Providence was incorporated as a town in 1710.
In 1917, fire destroyed much of the center of town, including eight blocks of Commercial Street and 100 businesses. The town’s current commercial center still has many buildings dating back to before the fire.
The original town hall was built in 1877, and the current one dates from 1934. The East Providence Historical Society is located in the town’s old Municipal Court building on Pawtucket Avenue. The Society offers walking tours of historic locations in the town.
The Providence River forms the city’s northern border with Pawtucket, while the Seekonk River forms the city’s eastern border with Riverside and Barrington. The Ten Mile River runs through the center of town, from Turner Reservoir in the west to the Pawtucket city line in the east.

History of East Providence
The City of East Providence is located in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The 2010 census reported that the city had a population of 47,037. It is the fifth largest city in the state, and the fourth largest city in the county. Providence, the state capital and the county seat, is about seven miles (11 km) to the west, and Newport is about 28 miles (45 km) to the east.
The City of East Providence was established on February 28, 1636 by Roger Williams and was one of the original four towns in Rhode Island. It originally included parts of what are now the cities of Bristol and Warren, and the town of Barrington. Williams had been banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony because of his religious beliefs, and he founded Providence Plantations as a refuge for those who shared his views.
The town was named for its location east of the Providence River. Early settlers engaged in farming, fishing, and trading. Around 1640, Williams built a mill on the Pawtucket River, which provided a source of income for the town.
East Providence was active in the colonial wars, and several of its residents served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. In 1776, the town was divided into three parts, each with its own local government. The central part, which included the original town center, eventually became the City of East Providence.
