History of East Liverpool
East Liverpool is a city in northeastern Ohio, United States. The city is situated along the Ohio River and is part of the Greater Pittsburgh region. Once a thriving bluecollar town, East Liverpool has suffered from the decline of the manufacturing sector in recent years. The city’s population was 11,195 at the 2010 census.
Early history
The area that is now East Liverpool was first settled by Native Americans of the Shawnee tribe in the 17th century. The first European settlers to the area were Pennsylvania Dutch farmers, who arrived in the early 18th century.
In 1762, the area was purchased by the English Crown from the Iroquois Confederacy. The town of Liverpool was laid out in 1787 and named after the English port city of the same name.
The town became part of the newly formed United States of America following the American Revolution. In 1810, East Liverpool was established as a separate municipality from Liverpool Township.
The town’s growth was spurred by the construction of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Canal in the early 1830s, which connected the Ohio River with the Erie Canal in New York state. The canal made East Liverpool an important transportation hub, and the town became known as the “Gateway to the West.”
The town’s economy was further bolstered by the discovery of coal deposits in the 1840s.
