History of East Haven

East Haven is a historic town located on the shoreline of New Haven County, Connecticut. It is situated about 12 miles east of downtown New Haven and about 3 miles from Long Island Sound. East Haven was first settled in 1638, making it one of the oldest towns in the state. The town was incorporated in 1785.

The area that is now East Haven was originally part of the New Haven Colony. In 1638, a group of settlers led by John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton set sail from England to start a new colony in America. They landed at what is now known as Quinnipiac Point in New Haven and established a settlement there. In 1639, the settlers purchased land from the local Indian tribe, the Quinnipiac, and established a town called New Haven.

East Haven began to grow in the early 1640s. A wharf was built in 1641, and a bridge was constructed across the Quinnipiac River in 1644. The town continued to grow in the 1600s and 1700s. A courthouse and jail were built in 1701.

In 1774, East Haven was divided into two parishes: the First or East Parish and the Second or West Parish. The two parishes were reunited in 1785 when the town was incorporated as a city.

During the Revolutionary War, East Haven was a patriot stronghold. The town was home to a number of military encampments and was the site of the Battle of Groton Heights in 1781.

After the war, East Haven continued to grow. In 1802, the first newspaper in the town was published. In 1812, a lighthouse was built at the mouth of the harbor. The first bank in town was established in 1818.

The 1800s were a time of growth and change for East Haven. In 1866, the Eastern Railroad Company built a line through the town, which led to an increase in trade and industry. The town’s population also began to grow rapidly, reaching nearly 5,000 by the end of the century.

The early 1900s were a period of transition for East Haven. The town’s economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing. Several factories were built in the town, including a brass mill, a shirt factory, and a shoe factory.

The town continued to grow in the mid1900s. New schools were built and the town’s infrastructure was improved. In the late 20th century, East Haven began to experience a decline in manufacturing. However, the town has worked to revitalize its economy in recent years and is once again a thriving community.
