Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.3 square miles (86 km2), of which 32.7 square miles (85 km2) is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), or 1.64%, is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 13,146 people, 5,241 households, and 3,590 families residing in the town. The population density was 402.8 people per square mile (155.9/km²). There were 5,541 housing units at an average density of 169.7 per square mile (55.4/km²).

The racial makeup of the town was 89.2% White, 2.0% African American, 0.1% Native American, 6.1% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population.

There were 5,241 households out of which 28.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% were nonfamilies. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the town, the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 31.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. History of East Greenwich

East Greenwich is a town in Kent County, Rhode Island, United States. It is the wealthiest municipality in Rhode Island. The town is located on Aquidneck Island, which is also home to the cities of Newport and Middletown. The town has a long and rich history dating back to the founding of the United Colonies of New England in 1636. East Greenwich was one of the four original townships in Rhode Island and was incorporated as a town in 1677.

The town was named for the Earl of Greenwich in England. Early settlement in East Greenwich was sporadic and it wasn’t until the late 1600s that the town began to experience significant growth.
