The town is located on the east bank of the River Medina, opposite its sister town of West Cowes. History of East Cowes
In 1086 the Domesday Book listed Cowes as one of 44 Island settlements with a population of between five and ten households. The island’s history since then has been one of decline, despite periods when the town was an important English port. In the 16th century, much of the town’s achitecture was rebuilt following a fire. However, by the 19th century it had once again declined, with many of its buildings being demolished, while others fell into ruin.
It was not until 1833 that the town began to recover, when it was selected as a suitable location for shipbuilding. The first shipyard was established by J.S. White, and within a few years the town had become an important centre for the construction of wooden sailing ships. However, the coming of the steam age in the second half of the 19th century brought an end to the town’s prosperity, and it once again declined.
The 20th century saw a further decline in the town’s fortunes, with the last shipyard closing in 1987. Since then, the town has been gradually regenerating, with new businesses and activitiesbringing life back to its streets.
