The log cabin was built in 1804 by Peter Whitmer, Jr. and is one of the oldest log cabins in the United States. History of East Aurora
East Aurora is a village in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 6,236 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The Village of East Aurora was incorporated in 1804. The first settlers were Benjamin Pegram and his family from Rhinebeck, New York. Pegram arrived in 1799 and built a log cabin on Buffalo Creek, which he operated as a tavern. East Aurora began to grow rapidly when Pegram’s tavern became a rest stop for stagecoaches traveling between Buffalo and Canandaigua.
In 1804, the village was officially incorporated as the “Village of East Aurora.” The first Village Board of Trustees consisted of Benjamin Pegram, William Johnston, Oliver Hart, Elijah Phelps, and Benjamin Dart.
Pegram’s tavern was also the site of the first church services in East Aurora. In 1811, the Christian denomination known as the New Lights built a log cabin church on what is now Main Street. The New Lights were the first religious group to establish a formal presence in the village.
The first school in East Aurora was built in 1813. It was a oneroom log cabin located on what is now Oakwood Avenue. The first teacher was William Johnston, who also served as the village’s first postmaster.
In 1814, the New York State Legislature established Genesee County, which included the village of East Aurora. The county seat was located in the village of Batavia, which is about 10 miles (16 km) east of East Aurora.
In 1818, the Buffalo and Niagara Falls Turnpike was built through East Aurora. This improved transportation access to the village and helped to spur economic growth.
In 1827, the Erie Canal was completed, makingEast Aurora more easily accessible from the eastern United States.
The 1830s was a decade of growth for East Aurora. Several businesses were established, including a distillery, a gristmill, a tannery, and a woolen mill. The 1860s was a decade of change for East Aurora. The village’s first fire company was organized in 1861. In 1862, the Aurora Mills Company was established, and it began operating a woolen mill on Elk Street.
The American Civil War (18611865) resulted in economic decline in East Aurora, as many young men enlisted in the Union Army and businesses closed due to the lack of customers. However, the village did see some growth in the form of new hotels and restaurants that were established to accommodate the increasing number of tourists who were visiting the area.
In 1867, the village’s first bank, the Bank of East Aurora, was founded.
In 1868, The Roycroft Campus, a community of artists and craftspeople, was established in East Aurora by Elbert Hubbard. The Roycroft Campus is now a National Historic Landmark.
In 1873, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was founded in East Aurora. This organization was instrumental in the passage of the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol.
In 1887, the East Aurora Advertiser, the village’s first daily newspaper, was founded.
In the early 20th century, East Aurora became known as the “Azalea City” because of the many azalea bushes that were planted in the village.
In 1908, the East Aurora High School was built. This school is now known as Iroquois Central School District.
In 1916, the Mary Jemison statue was erected in East Aurora. Jemison was a Seneca Indian woman who was captured by Shawnee Indians in 1758 and taken to live with them in Ohio. She eventually married a French fur trader and settled in Central New York.
In the 1920s, East Aurora experienced a period of growth and prosperity. Many new businesses were established, including the American Radiator Company, the E.B. Eddy Company, and the Swann Chemical Company.
In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Great Depression caused economic hardship in East Aurora. Many businesses closed, and many residents lost their jobs.
