History of Earley
The town of Earley is situated in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in Berkshire, England. It is located within the M25 motorway, to the west of Reading and east of Wokingham. The town has a population of around 33,000 and is within the Reading/Wokingham urban area. Earley is twinned with the town of L’isle Adam in France.
The name Earley is derived from the Old English ‘earl Igni’, meaning ‘wild fire’. It is believed that the name refers to a major fire which destroyed the town in the early 11th century.
The earliest record of the town dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086, which records it as ‘Eselei’. Over the centuries, the spelling of the town’s name has varied, with ‘Yerle’ and ‘Erle’ being common variants.
The town grew up around the 12th century castle of Earley126 which was built by Henry I. The castle was destroyed during the Civil War and all that remains today is the earthwork motte on which it stood.
In the early 13th century, a hospital was founded in Earley by Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester. This was later expanded into a priory by his son, Richard. The priory was closed down in the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century.
During the Second World War, Earley was home to a number of evacuees, as well as a prisoner of war camp.
