History of Durham (North Carolina)
The city of Durham is located in the state of North Carolina and is the county seat of Durham County. The city was established in 1869, and its name was chosen to honor the English city of Durham. The city has a population of approximately 228,330, and is the fourth largest city in the state. Durham is a part of the Research Triangle, which is home to three major research universities. The city is also home to Duke University, which is ranked as one of the top universities in the world.
The area that is now Durham was originally inhabited by the Siouanspeaking Occaneechi Native Americans. The Occaneechi were forced to move to Virginia in the late 17th century, and the land was taken over by whites. In 1705, the Virginia House of Burgesses established Durham County, and the area became a part of Granville County in 1746. The town of Durham was founded in 1869, and was named after the English city of the same name. The city was initially built around the newly established Duke University, which opened its doors in 1838.
Durham rapidly grew in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, due in part to the tobacco industry. The city was dubbed the “Bull City” due to the large number of tobacco factories and warehouses in the area. Durham’s tobacco industry began to decline in the mid20th century, however, and the city began to diversify its economy. Today, Durham is a major center for education, healthcare, and research. The city is also home to a vibrant arts and culture scene, and to a variety of professional sports teams.
