History of Durango
Durango, Colorado, is a historic city in the southwest United States. Founded in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, Durango is today known for its scenic mountain setting, its many outdoor recreational opportunities, and its thriving arts and culture scene.
Situated in the Animas River Valley in southwestern Colorado, Durango sits at an elevation of 6,512 feet (1,983 m) and is surrounded by the San Juan Mountains. The city is located approximately 30 miles (48 km) north of the New Mexico border and just west of the Continental Divide.
Durango was founded in 1880 as a supply town for the nearby silver mines at Silverton and Animas Forks. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad reached the site that same year, making Durango an important link in the transportation of goods and people between Denver and the West Coast.
The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, soon becoming an important regional center for trade and commerce. The construction of the AnimasLa Plata Water Project in the 1970s brought new economic development to the area, and today Durango is home to more than 18,000 people.
