Sights in Dunkirk

Dunkirk is a city in Chautauqua County, New York, in the United States. The population was 12,563 at the 2010 census, making it the ninthlargest city in the state. Dunkirk is bordered on the north by Lake Erie and on the south by the town of Fredonia. Dunkirk is the principal city of the Dunkirk, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2010 census, the micropolitan area had a population of 81,943.

Dunkirk is home to several factories, including Alcoa Howmet, and NRG Energy, as well as Brocton Port, the easternmost point on the Erie Canal. The Dunkirk Historic Lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dunkirk’s primary claim to fame is as the western terminus of the Erie Canal. The canal opened in 1825, linking Buffalo, New York to Albany, New York and the Hudson River. Dunkirk was the last stop on the canal and became a busy port.

The coming of the railroad in the 1850s increased Dunkirk’s prosperity. The city was connected to Buffalo and Salamanca, New York by the Erie Railroad and to Pennsylvania by the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad. The city was also served by the Buffalo and State Line Railroad and the Dunkirk and Southern Railroad.

The advent of modern transportation led to the city’s decline as a port. The Erie Canal was replaced by the Erie Canal Extension and the New York State Barge Canal, which bypassed Dunkirk. The railroads lost business to the trucking industry. And the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959 dealt a final blow to the city’s maritime commerce.

manufacturing took root in the city and today, Dunkirk is home to several factories. The most notable is Alcoa Howmet, which produces titanium critical to the aerospace industry. The company has been in Dunkirk since 1955 and is the city’s largest employer.

Despite its decline as a port, Dunkirk is still a scenic city with much to offer visitors. The Dunkirk Historic Lighthouse, built in 1826, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a beautiful example of early American architecture. The lighthouse is open to the public and offers stunning views of Lake Erie.

The city’s parks are also worth a visit. Bailey Park features a band shell and hosts concerts and other events throughout the summer. Wright Park has a playground, pavilion, and gazebo, and is a popular spot for picnics and family gatherings. Dunkirk also has a public beach, which is a great place to relax on a hot summer day.

If you’re interested in learning about the city’s history, the Dunkirk Historical Museum is a good place to start. The museum is located in an old church and features exhibits on the city’s maritime history and the history of Howmet.

Whether you’re interested in history, manufacturing, or simply want to enjoy a day by the lake, Dunkirk has something to offer.

History of Dunkirk

Dunkirk is a city in Chautauqua County, New York, in the United States. The population was 12,563 at the 2010 census, making it the ninthlargest city in the county. Dunkirk is built on a sandy, slightly elevated spot along the southeastern shore of Lake Erie and is the easternmost city in the state.

Dunkirk lies within the former town of Dunkirk, which was created in 1812. The city’s name comes from New York’s Governor, DeWitt Clinton. The original French name was Port de Plaisance, meaning “pleasure port”.

Dunkirk was first settled by Native Americans. The Erie people had a village and port here before the Iroquois drove them out in 1654. The Iroquois allowed the Senecas to resettle the area, and the Senecas established their own village and port.

The French built a fort here in 1720, but it was destroyed by the Iroquois in 1759 during the French and Indian War. The British built a new fort, Fort Schlosser, in 1764. The British and their Iroquois allies abandoned the fort in 1776 during the American Revolutionary War, and it was burned by the Americans.

Dunkirk was part of the town of Fredonia, which was the first town in the county to be organized after the county was created in 1808. The town of Dunkirk was created in 1812, and the village of Dunkirk was incorporated in 1831. The Erie Railway arrived in 1852, and the city grew rapidly as a result.

The population of Dunkirk peaked in 1920, at 17,021. The city began to decline in the 1930s, as the industries that had grown up around the Erie Railway began to disappear. The population fell to 13,591 by 1940.

The city began to revitalize in the 1980s, as a number of new industries moved in. The population has been increasing since then, and was estimated at 14,036 in 2016.
