History of Duncan

Duncan is a city in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 23,431 at the 2010 census. Duncan is the county seat of Stephens County. It is home toFuqua Park, which includes one of the nation’s first casinos. Duncan is famous as the site of Halliburton’s headquarters, and as the birthplace of basketball player Wayman Tisdale and country music singer Toby Keith.

Historically, the Duncan area was occupied by the Chisholm Trail cattle drives. In 1892, a Duncan post office was established in Pickett Station, Indian Territory. The city of Duncan was chartered in 1894. It was named for James Duncan, a meat packer from Kansas City, Missouri, who donated land for the townsite and railroad rightofway.

In 1895, the community was moved about two miles east to its current location when the Hyde Park addition was platted south of the railroad tracks. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway built through the town in 1896, which spurred economic growth.

The Duncan Oilfield was discovered in 1902. It was the first of a series of oilfields that ushered in an oil boom in Stephens County, which continued into the 1950s. The city of Duncan was formally incorporated in 1904.

The boom came to an abrupt end in the early 1930s with the onset of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. The oilfields began to dry up and many people left the area in search of work elsewhere. The population of Duncan declined to just over 10,000 by 1940.

The city began to experience a resurgence in the late 1930s with the establishment of Halliburton Company’s Duncan operations. Halliburton, which is now one of the world’s largest oilfield service companies, has been headquartered in Duncan since its inception in 1919.

The completion of Highway 81 through Duncan in 1949 was a major catalyst for economic growth. The highway connected Duncan to Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls, Texas, making it easier for people to visit and do business in the city.
