The area that is now Dubuque was originally inhabited by the Meskwaki (Fox) Native Americans. Julien Dubuque, a FrenchCanadian fur trader, was the first European to settle in the area in 1785. He received a land grant from the Spanish government and established a trading post near the presentday junction of Dubuque and Bluff streets. In 1803, the United States acquired the land from France in the Louisiana Purchase. Soon after, the Meskwaki began to sell their land to settlers in the Dubuque area.
