History of Dronfield
Dronfield is a town in Derbyshire, England, approximately 8mi northeast of Sheffield on the border with Nottinghamshire. The population of Dronfield at the 2011 Census was 22,082.
The origins of Dronfield date back to the AngloSaxon era when it was known as Drunanfelde, meaning “open land by the hill”. This was likely a reference to the hill upon which Dronfield Castle would later be built.
The first record of the castle dates back to 1131 when it was mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The castle was originally built by William de Ferrers, Earl of Derby, and served as a hunting lodge.
In 1266, the castle was besieged by the forces of Prince Edward during the Second Barons’ War. The castle was successfully defended, but was eventually captured after a prolonged siege.
The castle was subsequently dismantled on the orders of Parliament and its stone used to build a number of houses in the town.
Today, all that remains of the castle is a small section of the keep and a portion of the bailey wall. The castle site is now a public park.
The town’s name has changed several times over the centuries. It was first recorded as Dranfeld in 1165, then as Dranfeldia in 1194, before becoming Dronfeld in 1227.
