History of Douglas (Wyoming)
Situated at the confluence of the North and South Platte Rivers in eastern Wyoming, Douglas has a long and varied history. First inhabited by the Arapaho and Cheyenne peoples, the area was explored by John C. Fremont in the 1840s. In 1866, General Grenville Dodge established Fort Francis E. Warren here, which became an important outpost on the Overland Trail and served as a Pony Express station. In 1867, the Union Pacific Railroad reached the fort, and Douglas soon became an important railway town.
The city was officially incorporated in 1886, and its name honors Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois, one of the architects of the Homestead Act. Douglas soon became known as a “cow town,” as it was situated in the heart of Wyoming’s vast cattleranching territory. The city also became an important coalmining center, with several large mines operating in the surrounding area.
In the early 20th century, Douglas began to experience an economic decline, as the railroad industry began to decline and the coal mines began to close. The city’s fortunes were revived in the 1950s, however, when the discovery of oil in the area led to a boom in the petroleum industry. Today, Douglas is a small city of about 18,000 people, but its rich history and diverse heritage continue to make it an interesting place to visit and call home.
