History of Doncaster
There is evidence of human activity in Doncaster from the Bronze Age onwards. The Roman settlement of Danum was established around AD 70, and a civitas followed in about AD 200. Doncaster is thought to have grown up at the crossing point of two Roman roads, the road from York to Lincoln and Ermine Street. In the 5th century AD it was taken over by the Angles.
Doncaster remained an agricultural settlement until the Industrial Revolution. The first coal mine was sunk in Doncaster in 1751. Ironstone was also extracted from the rock strata on the edge of the town. With the coming of the railways in the 19th century, these industries flourished and Doncaster became a prosperous market town.
The town was hit hard by the Great Depression of the 1930s, but recovered quickly due to the local coal mining industry. However, the mines were all closed by the early 1980s, resulting in high unemployment.
Doncaster has undergone a regeneration process since the 1990s, with the opening of a new shopping centre, the Yorkshire Outlet Village, and the Doncaster Dome leisure complex. The town has also attracted new businesses, such as Nissan and Amazon.
