History of Dixon
Dixon is a city in northern Illinois, United States. The population was 15,733 at the 2010 census, down from 16,039 in 2000. Dixon is the county seat of Lee County and home to Dixon Municipal Airport, where air traffic is limited to general aviation.
Dixon is part of the Rock River Valley and is surrounded by farms, mostly soybean and corn fields. The city is home to three high schools, Dixon High School, Reagan Middle School, and Washington Elementary School.
Dixon was first settled by Joel Munson, who built a cabin on the banks of the Rock River. He was soon joined by others, including John Dixon, who gave the city its name. The community grew rapidly and was incorporated as a city in 1857.
During the Civil War, Dixon was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and many fugitive slaves were helped to escape to freedom. In 1867, Dixon was the site of the trial of former Vice President Aaron Burr for treason. He was acquitted, but the publicity generated by the trial boosted Dixon’s profile and brought many new residents to the city.
