Disley is a small village situated in the Peak District, Derbyshire. Despite its small size, the village is home to some of the most picturesque sights in the area.

History of Disley
Disley is a village and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. It is located on Disley Golf Course, just north of Stockport.
The village has a population of 1,606, falling to 1,539 at the 2011 Census.
The village of Disley is thought to date back to AngloSaxon times. The Domesday Book recorded it as Disslei, thought to mean ‘clearing in the wood’.
By the 13th century, Disley had a manor house and a church. The manor house was rebuilt in the 17th century and is now Disley Hall. The church, St. Mary’s, dates from the 14th century, with additions and alterations made over the centuries.
In the 18th century, the Disley Gunpowder Works were established. These were demolished in the early 20th century, but some remains can still be seen.
During the 19th century, the population of Disley grew rapidly, from 641 in 1801 to 1,610 by 1901. This was due to the growth of the textile industry in the area, with Disley becoming a centre for the production of calico and fustian.
The Disley Cooperative Society was founded in 1867, and built a store on Market Street in 1881. This later became the Coop Superstore, and is now Waitrose.
Disley Golf Club was founded in 1892, and the Disley Amalgamated Collieries were opened in 1903. These collieries supplied coal to the Manchester ship canal. They closed in 1966, but the site is now occupied by the Davyhulme Waste Water Treatment Works.
Today, Disley is a commuter village for Manchester and Stockport. It has a number of shops and businesses, as well as Disley Primary School and Disley Renaissance Centre, a community arts centre.
