History of Dickinson

Dickinson, North Dakota is a city in Stark County, in the state of North Dakota in the United States. The population was 17,787 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Stark County.

The city was founded in 1881 when the Northern Pacific Railroad built a line westward through the area. It was named after the company’s president, Don Alonzo Barton Dickinson. The city became the county seat in 1883 when Stark County was created.

The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, due to the coal mines in the area. The population reached 5,000 by 1900, and 10,000 by 1920. The coal mines began to close in the 1950s, and the city’s population has declined since then.

Dickinson is the home of Dickinson State University, and the Westridge Mall. The city is also the headquarters of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.
