History of Denton
Denton, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the county seat of Denton County, and is located about 40 miles (64 km) north of downtown Dallas. The city of Denton was established in 1857. The population was 113,383 at the 2010 census. Denton is home to the University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University, North Central Texas College, and Denton State Supported Living Center. The city experiences hot, humid summers and relatively cool winters. Rainfall occurs mostly in the spring and autumn.
Denton was founded on October 27, 1857, by John B. Denton. A native of Kentucky and Tennessee, Denton had come to Texas in 1855 as a surveyor for the Peters Colony Land Grant Company. He laid outposts at Grapevine Springs and Sweetwater Crossing on the Trinity River. The first settlers came to the area in the spring of 1858. In the early 1860s, the first courthouse and jail were built. The town continued to grow, and by 1880, Denton had a population of 1,200.
The arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881 brought additional growth, and in 1890, Denton was incorporated as a city. The population had reached 2,000 by this time.
