History of Del Rio

Del Rio is a city in and the county seat of Val Verde County, Texas. It is home to Laughlin Air Force Base, the United States Air Force’s primary pilot training facility. The city was founded in the 1880s and was named after the Rio Grande, which forms its western border.

The city of Del Rio was established on September 15, 1881. Its name was chosen because of its location on the Rio Grande, which serves as the border between the United States and Mexico. The city was originally settled by a group of Confederate veterans led by a man named John Cornyn. The town’s first post office opened in 1882, and the first school was established the following year.

The town began to grow rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1888, and the city soon became a major stop on the railroad line. By 1900, Del Rio had a population of nearly 5,000 people.

In 1917, Laughlin Army Airfield was established just outside of town, and during World War II it served as a training base for pilots. After the war, the base was converted into a training facility for the United States Air Force.

The city’s economy has long been linked to the military base, and today Laughlin Air Force Base is the city’s largest employer. In recent years, Del Rio has also become a popular retirement destination for retirees from across the country.
