History of DeKalb
DeKalb /dᵻˈkælb/ is a city in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 43,862 according to the 2010 census. The city is named after decorated German general Baron Johann de Kalb, who fought for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
DeKalb was originally called DeKalb Centre, and under the latter name was platted in 1853. Its name was changed to DeKalb in 1856, and the village was incorporated in 1857. DeKalb grew rapidly with the arrival of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in 1852. When the county seat was moved from Sycamore to DeKalb in 1856, the town really took off. DeKalb was officially chartered as a city in 1865.
During the early part of the 20th century, DeKalb was an industrial town with a population of over 10,000 people. There were two hospitals, a large number of factories, and a Business and Professional Men’s Club. The city also had a public library, two newspapers, and two banks. Industry included machines works, harness and carriage factories, wagon makers, manufacturers of farm implements, windmills, and barbed wire. From 1925 to 1960, DeKalb was home to the Farm Equipment Company, now a part of John Deere.
In 1965, Northern Illinois University was founded in DeKalb, bringing an influx of young people and adding to the cultural diversity of the area. DeKalb has since become a bedroom community for Chicago, with a population that has increased rapidly since the 1970s.
The original plan for the city of DeKalb was a rectangle, with its north and south sides being parallel to the train tracks that ran through the city, and its east and west sides perpendicular to them. This basic plan is still evident in the city’s street grid.
